Once a specific virus gene has been isolated and sequenced, the recombinant baculovirus can be obtained and used to infect insect cells or insect larvae to generate the same recombinant protein. More than 90% of the genes cloned in the baculuvirus expression system are efficiently expressed in larvae.
An additional advantage of using insect cells and insect larvae is that they facilitate postransductional modifications such as folding or glycosylation. These protein modifications are very similar to those obtained in mammalian cells and these vectors are probably the most versatile and universal for recombinant protein production when compared to bacteria, yeast or mammalian cells.
